E.W.Hyde
Founder of Almont
From the Almont History Book-1981

On the morning of July 4, 1906 Mr. E. W. Hyde was frustrated because he was unable to purchase a lot in Sims for his lumber yard. He attached his two carloads of lumber to the morning freight train and moved them on to the next side track named Almont. He located a nearby farmer, Mr. Rickart Olson, and together they surveyed out the town of Almont the same day. Such an unlikely beginning for small prairie town which celebrates its 100th birthday on July 4, 2006. This is the way I heard it growing up in Almont in the 1930's and 1940's. Another version appears in the Almont History Books from the 50th and 75th anniversaries but I prefer this one. Roger Becklund
